Every part of a P7M file has its own colour here, so you can follow the story at a glance:
- 🟦 Blue — the envelope. The PKCS#7 / CAdES container that wraps everything. This is the .p7m file you received.
- 🟩 Green — the digital signature. The mathematical seal that proves the content was not changed.
- 🟨 Yellow — the certificate. The signer's digital identity: who signed, and which authority vouches for them.
- 🟧 Orange — the document. The real file you are after: a PDF, an XML invoice, a Word file or an image.
- 🟥 Red — a warning. A mistake to avoid, or a case that needs extra care.
The story: what happens when you open a P7M file

Think of a P7M file as a sealed envelope travelling through the post. It happens in four scenes:
1. 🟦 The envelope arrives. Your computer sees a file called contract.pdf.p7m. It does not recognise the extension, so it shows a blank icon — it sees the envelope, not the letter.
2. 🟩 The seal is checked. The signature is a fingerprint of the document, locked with the signer's private key. If a single character were altered, the fingerprint would no longer match.
3. 🟨 The ID is read. The certificate inside tells you who signed — a person or a company — and which authority issued the certificate.
4. 🟧 The letter slides out. Once the envelope is removed, the original contract.pdf appears exactly as it was signed, ready to read, print or save.
Opening a P7M file simply means running scene 4: extracting the orange document from the blue envelope.

What is really inside a P7M file
A P7M is built in layers, like a matryoshka doll:
- 🟦 Outer layer — the PKCS#7 / CMS container. It describes how the data is packed. When it is used for European electronic signatures the format is called CAdES.
- 🟩 Signature layer. One or more signatures, each holding a hash of the document and the algorithm that was used.
- 🟨 Certificate layer. The certificate chain that lets anyone check the signer's identity.
- 🟧 Core — the document. The original bytes of your file, unchanged.
That is why a .p7m is always a little larger than the document it hides, and why renaming it to .pdf does not work.
Signed, encrypted or detached? Know your P7M
Not every file with "p7m" in its name behaves the same way:
- 🟦 Signed P7M (.p7m). The document travels inside the signature. This is the usual case for invoices and contracts, and anyone can open it.
- 🟩 Detached signature (.p7s). The signature is a separate small file next to the original document. There is nothing to extract.
- 🟥 Encrypted P7M. Protected for one specific recipient (S/MIME encryption). Only the holder of the matching private key can read it, so a viewer alone cannot open it.
- 🟨 Multiple signatures (.p7m.p7m). Several people signed one after another. Each layer is removed in turn until the document appears.

Open a P7M file on every device
- 🖥️ Windows 10 and 11: any browser works. To save the result as PDF use Ctrl + P → Save as PDF.
- 🍎 Mac: Safari, Chrome or Firefox. Use ⌘ + P → Save as PDF.
- 🤖 Android: the browser, or the free P7M Viewer app from Google Play.
- 📱 iPhone and iPad: open the site in Safari, tap Choose File and pick the file from Files or iCloud.
Invoices, PEC and e-mail attachments
Many P7M files are Italian electronic invoices (invoice.xml.p7m) or documents received through PEC, the certified e-mail system. Save the attachment first, then open it. For invoices, P7M Viewer shows a readable layout — supplier, customer, taxable amount, VAT and total — instead of raw XML. The PEC proves delivery; the signature proves authorship and integrity.
If your P7M file will not open
- 🟥 Renamed by mistake? Restore the original .p7m name.
- 🟥 Damaged download? Download the attachment again; e-mail previews sometimes cut files short.
- 🟥 Encrypted file? You need the recipient's private key. Ask the sender for an unencrypted signed copy.
